This refers to the wavy shapes or ridges that are pressed into a steam-softened sheet of material. This material is then sandwiched between flat sheets of material to form corrugated paperboard. Grooves serve as protective padding and help strengthen a box. Different widths and configurations offer distinct performance advantages. Corrugated boxes are of one of the following types.
Basis Weight Testing: A measure of mass per unit area, expressed in pounds per thousand square feet. Basis weight is used to describe linerboard, corrugated board and boxes.
The Mullen Burst Test– Measures the bursting strength of corrugated board. In the Mullen test, a rubber membrane bladder is pressed against the cardboard in a defined area to measure the pressure in pounds per square inch (psi) required for the cardboard to burst. Many customers, like Mullen, have tried boxes to protect heavier contents because they fear the liner will rip out.
ECT (Edge Crush Test)– Measures the top-to-bottom compressive strength of the cardboard box (also called stacking strength). This test examines two areas of strength: box compression strength (BCT) and stacking strength. If a customer is concerned about the maximum weight a box can hold, then ECT is your test. Today, it is the most commonly used type of test.
